Alex Morgan is Lazy

While watching the USWNT defeat France 1-0 on Saturday my biggest take away was that Alex Morgan is lazy. There were countless times when her teammates attempted to play Morgan in, behind the French defense, and she inexplicably pulled up or gave up on the ball. Even more frustrating to watch was the American starlet doing her best James Harden imitation. She showed aglaring apathy for playing any sort of defense whatsoever. Throughout the final 15 minutes of the game the US was under constant pressure by a desperate French attack, yet Morgan remained in a high position, up field from the ball, blissfully unaware of the dire situation around her goal.

Maybe you can chalk up Morgan's refusal to get behind the ball and help her teammates cling to their 1-0 lead in the waning moments of the game to ignorance, maybe she actually didn't think that she needed to contribute to her team's defensive effort. Or, more likely, all of her stardom and praise over the past 4 years have gone straight to her head. Morgan has emerged as the face of the US Women's National Team and thus America's sweetheart. Men want her and women want to be her, but at what cost? It appears that the constant acclaim that the American public has adorned her with has inflated the FIFA 16 cover girl's ego to Kobe levels. Morgan has become a prima donna who believes she is bigger than the team. Morgan's selfish attitude could eventually turn out to be disastrous for the USWNT, who have struggled to score and were lucky to escape with a win against France. If I was US head coach Jill Ellis I would do my darnedest to bring Morgan back from orbit as soon as possible, before her diva mentality derails the Americans' gold medal hopes.
