R.I.P. Rutgers Football

R.I.P. Rutgers Football

Rutgers football is dead. Following back to back 58-0 and 78-0 massacres at the hands of Ohio State and Michigan, respectively, the Scarlet Knights should realistically thinking about scrapping their program. I honestly believe that Don Bosco Prep would put up more of a fight than Rutgers. Their inclusion into the Big 10 has been a complete failure. Initially, some believed that playing in the Big 10 would be a selling point for recruits and would be pivotal in retaining in-state talent, but after performances like we saw on Saturday, you can bet that anyone considering Rutgers isn't anymore. In the last 2 losses, starting Scarlet Knight QB Scott Laviano has gone a combined 4-20 for 39 yards, which is an effective counter argument to the old adage that 'even a broken clock is right twice a day.' Rutgers has been nothing short of pathetic since inexplicably being invited to join the Big 10 in 2014. They have amassed just a 4-15 conference record since their inaugural season in the conference with 3 of those wins coming in their first season. FBS teams just don't get drubbed by nearly 80 by conference opponents in this day and age. Even when teams like Alabama and Clemson play lowly FCS teams the score line rarely creeps on 80. This sort of loss is a statement, not about Michigan's talent, but of the level of incompetence of the Rutgers program. At the very least Rutgers should be removed from the Big 10 for a conference that is more reflective of their football deficiencies, but an argument could also be made for their immediate relegation from FBS to FCS. Clearly the players aren't talented enough to compete at this level, so it's time to spare Rutgers any more humiliation. I beg the Rutgers AD and President to consider what kinds of the psychological effects that these types of blowouts have on the New Jersey youth. At this point, anything short of long-term PTSD will be seen as a resounding success.
