Premier League Roundup: Week 10

Premier League Roundup: Week 10

The three teams tied atop the league table held serve on Premier League match day 10 as Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool each scored 4 goals in convincing wins. While the three sides sit tied with 23 points each, City was able to retain the top spot due to the goal differential tie break.

First placed City snapped their 5 match winless streak in all competitions by squashing West Brom 4-0 on Saturday. Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan paved the way to the big victory with 2 goals each. Pep Guardiola's side will look to stay atop the table this weekend when they welcome 15th place Middlesbrough to the Etihad.

In a similarly dominant performance, second place Arsenal disposed of last place Sunderland 4-1 to keep pace with City. The Gunners were led by 2 goals each from Alexis Sanchez and Frenchman Olivier Giroud. Jermain Defoe converted a penalty in the 65th minute for the Black Cats but by then the damage had been done. Red hot Arsenal are currently riding a 15 match unbeaten streak in all competitions since their opening weekend defeat to Liverpool. They will put their streak to the test this weekend when 5th place North London arch-rivals Spurs make the short trek to the Emirates. Sunderland, on the other hand, are trending in the exact opposite direction as they have yet to record a league win and sit comfortably in last place with just 2 points gained this season.

Third place Liverpool also received the 4 goal memo on Saturday as they beat Crystal Palace 4-2 in an exciting back and forth affair. The Reds' potent offense has been on display all year, but on Saturday Liverpool got scoring contributions from the unlikely sources of center backs Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as well as midfielder Emre Can in addition to Brazilian stud Roberto Firmino. James McArthur paced Palace with a first half brace, but the Eagles were outclassed in the end. While scoring hasn't been an issue for Jurgen Klopp's side this season, conceding goals has been. Despite being tied with Man City for the league lead in goals for with 24, the inconsistent Liverpool back line has given up an alarming 13 goals against - the most of any team in the top 9 - and have yet to record a clean sheet in league play. Liverpool are currently riding an 11 match unbeaten streak in all competitions and welcome a stubborn 7th place Watford side to Anfield this weekend. With the loss, Palace have now lost their last 3 league matches and are winless in their last 4 and have dropped to 13th. Benteke and co. will look to get back on track this weekend against Burnley.

Tottenham Hotspur remain the lone unbeaten team in the Premier League after their 1-1 draw with 11th place Leicester City on Saturday. Despite having not lost yet, Spurs have dropped a number of points due to their 5 draws, and find themselves slipping to 5th in the league table. Saturdays draw was Spurs' 3rd in a row in league as they have found scoring increasingly difficult with the absence of injured star striker Harry Kane. His substitute, Vincent Janssen, converted a penalty in the 44th minute just before halftime to give Tottenham the 1-0 advantage. However, Ahmed Musa leveled the scoreline at 1 a piece in the 48th minute on Leicester's only shot on target. Spurs will be disappointed by dropping 2 points in this one, but they still remain just 3 points out of first and have a tremendous opportunity to gain ground this weekend when they face 2nd place Arsenal in the North London derby. Leicester have found defending their title to be more difficult than expected, but will look to take 3 points this weekend against West Brom at Home.

While Spurs can't seem to secure 3 points, their London rivals Chelsea can't seem to drop a point. The Blues extended their Premier League shutout streak to 4 in a row with a 2-0 win over Southampton last Sunday. Eden Hazard got Chelsea on the board just 6 minutes into the match before Golden Boot leader Diego Costa doubled the lead in the 55th minute for his 8th tally of the season. Antonio Conte's side has been clicking recently and, with their most recent win, has leaped Spurs into 4th place. They face a tough challenge this weekend however, as they welcome 6th place Everton to Stamford Bridge.

While Chelsea haven't conceded a goal in 4 league matches, Manchester United have failed to score in their last 3 league games as the Red Devils drew lowly Burnley 0-0 over the weekend. The English press are having a field day with Jose Mourinho's struggles as there is clearly something wrong with the English giants. Despite registering a whopping 38 shots, Zlatan alone had 12 attempts, and 72% of the possession, United were unable to unlock the Burnley defense. United are now winless in their last 4 league matches and, with their last draw, have been jumped by Watford in the league standings. The Red Devils currently sit 8th in the league table but have a golden opportunity against 19th place Swansea City this weekend to quiet their critics and earn a much needed 3 points.
